Engineering Document Management in Capital Project

Along with the trends towards Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Cloud collaboration, there is a growing number of documents and documentation to be exchanged and approved between the disciplines and partners in an engineering capital project. And so, it is a growing challenge to manage the review and approval of all documents and their revisions across the project phases.

Large engineering and construction projects are notoriously challenging. McKinsey reports that nine out of ten large infrastructure projects go over budget. The company has found that the spending overrun is caused by poor project execution in 73% of the cases. At the center of poor execution is poor document management. In another study, three-quarters of respondents said that project document issues caused overruns on many of their projects with a further 25% saying that poor documentation had led to construction delays.

As being responsible for the rollout and deployment of Engineering Document Management products for so many years now, I feel encouraged to share my knowledge and experiences about the scope, best practices, and pitfalls of Engineering Document Management solutions with my community.

I am planning to publish a series of articles around Engineering Document Management in Capital Projects which are:

  1. Goals and features of EDM in Capital Projects

  2. Planning of documents in engineering projects with MDL/MDR

  3. Revision Control with Project Workspaces

  4. Tracking of Engineering Document delivery with State Control and Progress Reporting

  5. Collaboration on documents with contractors, suppliers, and owner/operators

  6. Review & Approval Process Flow in Capital Project

  7. Transmittals in engineering projects

Summary

Effective document management is key to ensuring the successful design and construction of capital projects. From feasibility study to detailed design to procurement, construction, and commissioning, every stage in the process is determined by the quality of its documentation. Engineering Document Management brings accuracy and control to facilitate fast and efficient information sharing and collaboration in engineering capital projects.
